Wind jobs double in the UK- Go Green

The UK wind energy sector saw an estimated double employment increase last year, bucking the shrinking jobs market in the UK economy as a whole. Figures released by renewable energy trade body RenewableUK, showed a 91% increase in full time employment for the wind energy sector between 2007/8 and 2009/10.

These new figures come at a time when the industry is seeing pledges by government and private sectors to boost clean, green energy.

Chief executive of RenewableUK has said, “It is now obvious that acting decisively on reducing carbon emissions and diversifying our energy supply will bring a double bonanza of increased green energy yield and economic growth”. Followed by, “Creating a policy framework that ensures that our wind, wave and tidal resources are fully utilised will create jobs and stimulate economic activity at a time when we need it most”.

RenewableUK will be releasing further analysis next month showing the potential for jobs growth in the sector by 2020. Analysis from the Carbon Trust has demonstrated that the offshore wind sector could generate up to 70,000 jobs by 2020.
