UK property developers ‘most eco-friendly’

British property developers are among the most eco-friendly and committed to sustainability in the world, according to a new report.

A global survey of 700 listed property companies and fund managers carried out by researchers at Maastricht University has found that only investors in Australia, Sweden and the UK are anywhere near close to attaining the top score in the poll’s Environmental Real Estate Index.

However, a surprisingly low number of the firms surveyed were actually capable of providing relevant statistics across some of the survey’s key measures.

Only a fifth (19 per cent) of respondents was able to provide any information on energy consumption, while only 14 per cent were capable of submitting carbon emissions figures.

Dr Nils Kok, professor at Maastricht University and report author, said: “Benchmarking the energy consumption of a real estate portfolio is the key first step to making properties more efficient, and the current lack of metrics indicates that we are standing just at the beginning of the road to energy efficiency in the commercial real estate sector.”

Meanwhile, a survey by the Carbon Trust published earlier this week revealed that UK businesses are particularly concerned about the impact of energy costs during the economic recovery.ADNFCR-2805-ID-19586630-ADNFCR
