Smart meter security concerns ‘must be addressed’

Ministers need to address concerns that important business and consumer details collected on eco-friendly smart meters will be misused, it has been claimed.

Smart meters will be capable of sending and receiving information, but there is concern that data could be misused by police, insurance companies or even criminals, reports the Times.

Speaking to the newspaper, senior renewables analyst at Datamonitor and co-author of a report on smart metering Alex Desbarres said that it is important that a dialogue about this issue is established earlier.

He said: “Many people do not like the idea of utility companies having a permanent window on their private life.

“What is the industry going to do with all this data? At the moment, they do not have the processes to manage it.”

Smart meters are due to be installed in all homes by 2020, and may also be taken up by businesses keen on boosting carbon reduction and energy waste reduction.ADNFCR-2805-ID-19560823-ADNFCR
