Recycling message sent to councils by Unions

The public services union has released a report on the best and worst councils for recycling.

The survey covered 357 councils and ranked them according to the rates of re-use, recycling or composting. Staffordshire Moorlands came at the top of the league with 61.8% recycling rate and Ashford Borough Council was at the bottom of the league with only 15.3% recycling rate.

The report has been published in accordance with the increase in Landfill Tax, which is due to rise over the next four years from £48 per tonne to £80 per tonne, nearly doubled.

The public services union secretary, Brian Strutton said, “Dumping waste in landfill sites is not only bad for the environment- it’s also increasingly uneconomic”.
