Landfill fire will burn for another two weeks

A landfill will be on fire for at least another two weeks with firefighters remaining on site to water-down smouldering waste.
The landfill in Kerdiffstown near Nas in Ireland caught fire two weeks ago and is still burning.

Residents living nearby to the site have been ordered to stay inside, while the authorities have issued warnings for to the elderly and young children to keep well away from the site.

Firefighters have this week said they have brought the fire under control and reduced smoke levels in the area.

However, even though the fire is under control, it is not likely to be fully put out for another two weeks.

During the next fortnight an estimated 40,000 cubic metres of waste material will have to be brought down to a safe temperature to make sure there is no threat of a further flare-up.
