Just 100 companies responsible for 71% of global emissions, study says.

In a newly published Carbon Majors Report it has been found that just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988.

The report “Pinpoints how a relatively small set of fossil fuel producers may hold the key to systemic change on carbon emissions,” says Pedro Faria, technical director at environmental non-profit CDP, which published the report in collaboration with the Climate Accountability Institute.

The report also found that half of global industrial emissions since 1988 can be traced to just 25 corporate and state-owned entities, the majority of these 25 are large fossil fuel producers.

The report suggests that if fossil fuels continue to be extracted at the same rate over the next 28 years, global average temperatures would be on course to rise by 4C by the end of the century. This is likely to have catastrophic consequences including substantial species extinction and global food scarcity risks.

Faria goes onto the say that while companies have a huge role in tackling climate change, the barrier is the “absolute tension” between short-term profitability and the urgent need to reduce emissions. Here at Wiles Greenworld we aim to combine Sustainable practices such as reducing emissions with long term profit and growth.

We are not the only ones, according to Michael Brune, (executive director of the Sierra Club) there is a growing “wave of companies that are acting in the opposite manner to the companies in this report.” With giants such as Apple, Facebook, Google and Ikea committing to 100% renewable power and car companies committing to electric or hydrogen fueled cars as discussed in our previous article.

But it’s not just the industry giants that can contribute to Emission Reduction, every business big and small has a role to play. We at Wiles Greenworld, Green Office Suppliers London, hold Sustainability to our core values and offer Environmental Consultancy to help you incorporate Sustainability into your daily business operations.
