What is ISO 14001?

The ISO 14001 International standard outlines requirements for the creation and implementation of an Environmental Management System which enables organisations to control their environmental impact. Through development of such systems organisations establish an environmental policy and objectives taking into account legal and other requirements to which the organisation subscribes.

The system applies to the environmental aspects that the organisation can control and over those which it can be expected to have an influence. It does not state specific environmental criteria. The ISO 14001 International Standard is applicable to any Organisation that wishes to implement, maintain or improve an Environmental Management System and assure itself of its conformance with its Environmental Policy and legal requirements.

The requirements of the standard are intended to be incorporated into the Environmental Management System. The extent of allocation depends on factors such as the Environmental Policy of the organisation, nature of its activities and conditions in which it operates.
