Green Office News: Oil… a necessary evil?

We all know that oil is now the self declared fuel of the world. It powers our cars, our homes, our aeroplanes and our factories and through which, drives economic development the world over.

For these reasons, it’s a tool that politicians use too, as this article demonstrates. Unfortunately, as we know too, there is a downside to the use of oil and other fossil fuels; which lies in its environmental impact. In a nutshell, although Scotland may be sitting on more than 24bn barrels of oil and gas in North Sea reservoirs, with a potential value of £1.5t; an investigation by the Guardian last year established that burning that much oil would mean the release of 10bn tonnes of CO2 over 30 years, dwarfing the saving of 20m tonnes of CO2 from Scotland’s 100% renewable electricity target for 2020.

It’s this conflict that leads to great battles between environmental groups to keep oil in the ground, along with the CO2, and the politicians and energy companies trying to make money by extracting it!

The question is where do you sit? Are you environmentally friendly enough to want the fuel efficient car and choose renewable power sources? At Wiles Greenworld we’re proud to say that we definitely are. We’ve been measuring and managing our carbon footprint since 2008 and have reduced it every year since too.
