Green Office News: New year… New Emissions Trading Scheme

You may or may not be aware that a carbon emissions trading scheme has been active in the Eurozone since 2005 and has raised billion of Euros for renewable energy projects since its inception.

On the back of this success, this January has seen the launch of the 2nd emissions trading scheme, this time in California, with the goal to lower the State’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) to 1990 levels by 2020, and ultimately to achieve an 80% reduction from 1990 levels by 2050.

The trading scheme is set to work in a similar way to the one we have here in Europe, where high emitting industries with factories etc. purchase permits and credits from other businesses operating in green industries.

At Wiles Greenworld we think California, as the world’s ninth largest economy and with a population 37 million people, is fully justified to introduce this scheme and continue its work as a trailblazer when it comes to environmental policy introduction in the U.S.A.
