Green Office News – Business’ Need to Separate Their Waste!

As advocates for doing the right thing with regards to recycling and having our customers separate paper, plastics, metal and glass there has been legislation recently introduced to support us in this and to address the decreasing quality of recycling as businesses are favouring co-mingled waste solutions.

From January 1st 2015, new UK waste regulations requires businesses to separate recyclable material (paper, plastic, metal and glass) from other waste. This means collecting these four wastes separately from each other and from other wastes – something that we already do. Plastic and cans are mixed because the Material Recovery Facility at our recycling partner, Edwards, is state of the art and uses magnets and eddy currents to separate metals from plastic and this ensures the quality of the recycling is not reduced through co-mingling of cans and plastics. This amendment to the EU Waste Framework Directive is to ensure improvement to the quality and quantity of recycling across the UK. This amendment affects both household and business waste.
