France to ban diesel and petrol engines by 2040

Yesterday France made an exciting step forward in the journey for Sustainable Fuel. Nicolas Hulot, the country’s new ecology minister, said: “We are announcing an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.” This move on the back of 2025 pledges by the Netherlands and Norway as well as sustained interest for a move away from petrol and diesel by Germany and India indicates the beginning of a “Veritable Revolution” as Minister Hulot said himself.

This announcement marks the start of a huge project, with only 1.1% of new cars sold in France being electric or hybrid the country is a distance away from a full integration towards hybrid and electric vehicles. The 1.1% is considerably better than the EU registrations coming in at just 0.6% however with recent commitments made by European car manufacturers such as Volvo and Renault-Nissan the figure is expected to rise.

Just after this exciting announcement, new analysis from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) has found that electric vehicles will account for more than half of new car sales by the time the French ban is enforced in 2040. This forecast shows potential major progress in EV’s and vehicle Sustainability however the report cites the need for more investment in charging infrastructure and the importance of Business backing.
