EU approves aviation emissions trading

The EU’s plans to charge airlines for carbon emitted during all flights in and out of its airports are legal, the European Court of Justice ruled today.

The court upheld a preliminary decision taken in October by Advocate General Juliane Kokott who dismissed a legal challenge brought by US airlines, clearing the scheme to start from January 1 2012.
