Energy efficient offices 'could have own wind turbines'
10 Mar 2010
Energy efficient offices could be powered by renewable energy from wind turbines at industrial sites, it has been said.
Locating wind turbines near industry could ease opposition to the machines for aesthetic reasons and allow firms to take direct sustainability action.
The scheme is already offered by independent electricity firm Ecotricity, allowing businesses to use what energy they need from the wind turbines and feed any excess into the grid.
"Modern windmill designs are extremely efficient - around 90 per cent efficient - and getting the most from them depends on careful planning and the wind potential at each location," explained Ecotricity founder and managing director Dale Vince.
Investment firm Novus Modus is also be looking to wind turbines in industrial areas to aid sustainability and energy efficient office efforts.
Some £180 million will be used to create a new company, Airvolution, to push for more renewable energy generation.
